Cork Heritage Open Day, now in its fourth year, has become a much loved and anticipated event during Heritage Week. It is always greeted with great enthusiasm by building owners and members of the public alike with an estimated 5000 people participating in the day.
In 2008 Cork Heritage Open Day was launched by the Deputy Lord Mayor Cllr. Jim Corr at the Beamish and Crawford Brewery with over 60 people in attendance. The Deputy Lord Mayor paid tribute in particular to all of the building owners and proprietors for their generosity and support for this exciting event and welcomed the addition of the historic plaques as a special feature to the event. He also commended the Cork City Council Heritage Officer, Niamh Twomey and her colleagues for organizing the event.
Mr. Noel Barrett of Beamish and Crawford outlined the long and varied history of brewing on the site of the current Beamish and Crawford which dates back to before 1650 and possibly as far back as 1500 and invited everyone to visit the brewery on Cork Heritage Open Day.
Niamh Twomey, Heritage Officer Cork City Council acknowledged Cork County Council Heritage Office, the Heritage Council and the Dept of he Environment, Heritage and Local Government for co-funding this project and encouraged everyone to participate in an event that celebrates the rich Built Heritage of Cork.
