Cork City Heritage Open Day Events 2015

Cork Heritage Open Day is organised by Cork City Council as part of Heritage Week in partnership with the Heritage Council.

Cork Heritage Open Day was a unique event, which happened on Saturday, 22nd August 2015, and celebrates the amazing architecture and history of the Built Heritage in Cork City.

2015 saw a jam-packed very successful heritage programme this year! All Heritage Open Day Events were free.

Children’s Open Day Treasure Hunt

A fun-filled adventure exploring four heritage buildings of Cork in a special historic treasure hunt for kids of all ages.

Medieval Family Fun Day at Elizabeth Fort

Fun family event to celebrate Cork City's Medieval past (as part of Irish Walled Towns Day) with historical re-enactments and displays of weaponry, pottery and household items as well as medieval games by Claíomh and Bran Dubh. Cork Archery Club will have demonstrations with an opportunity to practice your archery skills too! Face painting, balloon making and some fun surprises for all the family!!! Be an archaeologist for a day and visit the archaeology roadshow, which includes a dig-in-a-box and a dig-a- viking-warrior!! Learn all about Cork's medieval and 17th century military history!!!

Heritage Tours of Blackrock Castle

Take a journey back in time to learn about the colourful history of the inner harbour fort and the later expansions that created Blackrock Castle of today. Your tour guide will bring you to the lower turret overlooking Cork Harbour and down to the original fort and gunnery while regaling you with tales of the past and present.

Carpenters Hall Heritage Exhibition

Photo exhibition, replica marching banner, and carpenters chair from the 1800's with carved wolf hounds and round towers. Denis Hennessey, stonecutter will give a demonstration of letter cutting and the McCarthy's, a well known traditional stonecutting family in Cork, will talk about stonecutting in the city.

Traveller Visibility Building

The Traveller Visibility Building will be open on Cork Heritage Open Day and will give the public an insight into the work with Travellers locally. There will be screenings of the TVG 21 Years Anniversary Documentary made by Framework Films, which gives an historical overview of the development of the project.

Vibes and Scribes Children's Book Reading

A special children's reading for 5-10 year olds will take place in Vibes and Scribes at 11am. Reading will focus on Irish legends especially those written by Eddie Lenihan about Fionn MacCumhail. There will also be a reading of Eithne Massey's verson of The Children of Lir.

Cork Travellers Women's Network

Cork Traveller Women's Network with Cork Public Museum will host an exhibition celebrating the tradition of horse ownership for travellers. The exhibition, which will take place in the Traveller Culture Exhibit, will include looped screenings of the documentary "Tales of the Road" a documentary made in Cork in 2013 by director Noel Twomey with the men and boys of Spring Lane as well as heritage and contemporary photographs.
