LE SAMUEL BECKETT was commissioned in 2014 and is the first ship of her class of four operated by the Irish Naval Service .She is named after the famous Irish author and playwright Samuel Becket.
She is armed with a 76mm OTO MELARA gun operated by a SEAFIRE fire control system. Her secondary and tertiary armaments consist of 2 x 20mm, 2 x 12.7mm as well as 3 x General Purpose Machine Guns.
LE SAMUEL BECKETT is fitted with 3 x MST 9M RHIBS which coupled with the Caley Davit launch system allows enhanced capability in conducting small boat operations.
A s well as fulfilling primary Maritime Defence and Security Operations LE SAMUEL BECKETT deployed to the Mediterranean under the auspices of EUNAVFORMED OP SOPHIA in 2018 having previously been involved in OP PONTUS, a unilateral humanitarian mission conducted under a bilateral agreement between Ireland and Italy, on two occasions.
